Darrington, Washington

Darrington is a beautiful small community at the base of the cascade mountains in western Washington. Here is a map if you are interested in the specifics of where it is located. It is on the Mountain Loop Highway which is a wonderful day trip from Seattle.

Darrington is a community on the Sauk River, 29 miles east of Arlington. The name is probably a corruption of Barrington, an early settler. The town was first established as a night camp for the wagon route linking the Monte Cristo mines to the Puget Sound area. Hikers can reach Whitehorse Mountain, the site of one of the lowest elevation glaciers in the lower 48 states, just a short hike from town.

Whitehorse Mountain is the main reason we decided to look for land in the Darrington area. The views of Whitehorse from Darrington are outstanding. You don't get them from all the pieces of land so you have to be really careful to make sure that the view is clear and unobstructed.

There is lots of mountain climbing that takes place in this area. Of course Whitehorse is one place they go but also, Blueberry Hill is another.

We really like waterfalls. Turns out there are several right around Darrington as well as alot all around the Cascades. Check this out for a list of North Cascades waterfalls or if you are just interested in some around Darrington, why not go see Mammoth Falls.

Here is a link to an expedition to Whitehorse. Glacier Peak Wilderness has some good hiking and I think that Green Mountain is the closest to Darrington.

There are lots of hiking trails around Darrington and in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The Sauk River has lots of things to offer including rafting and fishing. Another thing that is interesting to do in Darrington is gliding at the Darrington Airport.
